Nicola, who suffers from a mental ill-health condition, has enjoyed working at Haven PTS for almost two years. Formerly running her own beauty salon, Nicola was forced to find stable employment due to the recession and poor economic climate. She initially worked as a receptionist at a doctor’s surgery; however the high-pressure working environment was proving harmful for her mental well-being. Luckily Nicola’s mum, a long-serving employee who had previously worked for Remploy and still works here at Haven PTS, informed her of several job opportunities we had available at the time.

On starting work at Haven PTS Nicola commenced a structured manufacturing training programme focusing on health and safety in the factory and working as part of a team on a fast paced manufacturing line. Nicola has blossomed in her new role and she likes her job role at Haven PTS because it involves her being “multi-skilled”.  She is directly involved in the production of garments and her current responsibilities include: working the lockstitch machine, sewing pockets onto garments, the binding of material at necklines, attaching flaps onto sleeves, and occasionally batching up and pressing garments.  She stresses the importance of everyone working together to ensure the smooth running of the production process.

Nicola really enjoys working here at Haven PTS: “I love the set working hours – having weekends and evenings off.  I like how fast-paced the work is, there’s no boredom.  I’ve also learnt a new skill – I could never sew before coming here. The people are all really nice and helpful and Nicki and Maureen (Nicola’s floor managers) are lovely.”
